A Swipe-Based Platform Designed to Keep Clothes in Circulation

Zwap is a mobile app concept created during a 48-hour designathon to address Australia's fast fashion crisis. Australia is the highest consumer of fast fashion per capita, and millions of garments end up in landfills each year after minimal use. At the same time, Gen Z is increasingly open to thrifting and re-wearing clothing but lacks accessible, engaging platforms that make it easy and fun.

Winner: Best UI Design & 3rd Place, SUEDE USYD Hackathon

Quick Data Insight

Australia sends over 200,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill every year, and only 7% is recycled

Problem

Australians dispose of massive amounts of clothing each year, most ending up in landfill.

Fast fashion encourages over-consumption, while second-hand options often feel inconvenient or uncool.

Gen Z wants sustainable choices, but won’t compromise on style or experience.

Solution - Zwap

Zwap is a fashion-swap and thrift app designed to make sustainable clothing feel aspirational. It lets users browse, donate, and thrift high-quality second-hand pieces in a stylish, Gen-Z-first interface.

Reflection

Zwap taught me how to design for a generation that expects sustainability without sacrificing aesthetics. I learned to balance bold visual storytelling with simplicity, iterate quickly under pressure, and build an experience that nudges users toward better habits through good design. It reinforced a lesson I carry into every project: clarity, emotion, and usability matter just as much as the idea itself.
